NORMAL SKIN:
DEFY is the perfect middle ground. As a person with normal skin, you find yourself needing a little boost throughout the week. Defy is an AHA-packed leave-on cream to help exfoliate dead skin cells, and reveal bright glowing skin.
Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate you hear it all the time, but 85% of my clients at our Sutherland Shire Skin Clinic are scared to do it!
Adding exfoliation to your weekly skincare routine can be overwhelming as it feels like a very fine line between too much and too little. In this blog, I am giving you all the tools to figure out how often you should exfoliate, my favourite at-home exfoliating products, and how you can step up your exfoliation game with Contouring Bodies Facial Clinic!
First, let's break down how often you should be exfoliating.
How often you exfoliate depends on your own personal skin type. The universal range is 2 - 3 times a week, once a week just isn't enough anymore. We shed up to 50 million skin cells A DAY! can you believe that!
If you were to only exfoliate once a week that leaves 300 million dead skin cells built up throughout the week. Be sure to check your skincare products for ingredients such as retinol, acids, or scrubs as these are all exfoliants. Using a leave-on exfoliant such as retinol or acid 2-3 times a week followed by a larger exfoliation session on the weekend is perfect!
At Contouring Bodies Sydney Facial Clinic, we stock only the best cosmeceutical, non-comodogenic skincare, which both physical and chemical exfoliants, making sure there is a product for everyone!
I have a few favourite exfoliating products that I use in the treatment room and my own bathroom at home! Let's break them down by skin type and then concern.
NORMAL SKIN:
DEFY is the perfect middle ground. As a person with normal skin, you find yourself needing a little boost throughout the week. Defy is an AHA-packed leave-on cream to help exfoliate dead skin cells, and reveal bright glowing skin.
DRY SKIN:
PURE ENZYMES is a fantastic option. Pure Enzymes is a chemical exfoliant that will help to remove excess dry skin while moisturising with Lactic acid.
Rather than using gritty skincare ingredients to remove dry skin, chemical exfoliators help slough away dead skin by encouraging healthy skin renewal. Examples of chemical exfoliants include AHAs, BHA and Fruit Enzymes—all of which work at different levels to help exfoliate the complexion.
Dehydrated skin acts like oily skin and is often confused for it. With Dehydrated skin, we want to make sure to exfoliate dead skin cells without stripping the skin of all water. Pure Enzymes is perfect to keep your skin hydrated while gently exfoliating.
OILY SKIN:
PURITY DETOX will break down excess oils and build up. A foaming scrub packed with salicylic acid will leave you feeling squeaky clean from the week.
If a scrub is what you prefer, then this product is for you. It comes in powder form, so you can adjust the mixture with water or a cleanser to get the consistency you want.
Now, depending on your skin concerns, we may make some adjustments to your routine. Here are some of the most common skin concerns I see and which exfoliators are best!
HYPER-PIGMENTATION: Pure Enzymes + Pure C
Treating hyper pigmentation is all about brightening the skin! Pure Enzymes is packed with Lactic acid and fruit enzymes which is a fantastic lightener and adding a couple of shakes of Pure C will give this exfoliant a dose of Vitamin C to boost its lightening effects even more.
INFLAMMED ACNE - Pure Enzymes
Treating inflamed acne is always a bit different than other types of congestion. Since the skin's barrier is already disrupted and sensitive, scrub-like products can be even more irritating to the skin and can make matters worse. A gentle but effective exfoliant is the way to go!
BLACKHEAD/NON-INFLAMMED ACNE - Defy or Purity Detox Scrub
Non-inflamed acne is all about boosting the skin's shedding process to keep as much skin from getting clogged as possible. Using a product like Defy 2 - 3 times a week or Purity Detox Scrub 1 - 2 times a week is a great way to clear dead skin build-up.
Redness / Sensitivity - Defy
Like inflamed acne, red or sensitive skin already has a compromised skin barrier. This means we need to make sure to support the skin's natural barrier without over-exfoliating. Defy is perfect to use throughout the week. Be sure to watch your skin's reaction and build up your tolerance to avoid further sensitivity.
Here are a couple of ways to use these products to step up your at-home routine!
Purity Clean Cleanser - Apply Purity Clean with dry hands onto a dry face and let sit for 5 -10 minutes before rinsing!
Purity Duo - Mix Purity Clean Cleanser and Purity Detox Scrub for a powerful clean, use in place of your 2nd cleanse at night.
Pure Enzymes - My favourite way to use this product is actually applying it before I step into the shower. Apply Pure Enzymes to a dry face with dry hands and let it sit while waiting for the shower to warm up. I will usually leave it on in the shower while I wash my hair or body to let the steam work some magic too!
Add Defy - A lot of people are concerned with jumping into the world of retinol, which is completely understandable. Using Defy as a baby step into the routine of retinol is the perfect way to start including a nightly exfoliation!
